Thieves Cleaner Cleaning Showers and Bathtubs

1. Replacing Bleach to Clean Showers & Bathtubs

For showers and bathtubs we all face built-up soap scum, hard-water buildup, germs and grime.

"Showers and bathroom countertops should be cleaned at least twice a week with a disinfectant that contains bleach to help reduce the spread of viruses, fungi, and bacteria" according to doctor Paul Horowitz MD, the medical director of Paediatric Clinics at Legacy Health System in Portland bathtubs.

According to Horowitz, here's what can happen if you don't clean twice a week "Germs can line the walls (of the tub) and you can easily touch the surface and then touch your mouth. The dead skin cells that sit on inside of the tub can be contaminated. If someone with a cut or open wound goes in the tub, those organisms can infect that wound and increase the overall load of bacteria."

Bleach however poses a series of health hazards and concerns.

"Exposure to bleach can irritate the nose, eyes, skin, and lungs. Serious side effects of using bleach can include respiratory problems, skin burns, damage to the nervous system, asthma flares, extreme headaches, migraines, and vomiting. The most serious hazard of bleach to our bodies is that when mixed with ammonia, vinegar, or any other acid type cleaning material, it can cause dangerous, toxic fumes to be emitted into the air. These toxins can cause serious, sometimes deadly, side effects when inhaled. Bleach is toxic to people, animals and our environment. Bleach is particularly harmful to infants, young children and pets because their immune systems cannot fight off the harsh chemicals."[1]

Given the health concerns of bleach, many people are looking to an all-natural bleach alternative. That's where Thieves Household Cleaner comes to the forefront. Thieves Cleaner can be used instead of bleach.

Use Thieves household cleaner to remove hard-water buildup, soap scum, to remove stubborn bathtub ring and to sanitise.

Simply dilute Thieves Household Cleaner in a water spray bottle, then spray surfaces and wipe clean. See the Thieves Household Cleaner page for dilution ratios.

4. Cleaning & Sanitising Bathroom Surfaces

Everybody knows we need to keep our bathroom basins and surfaces clean and sanitised. Bathrooms are a breading ground for germs. Here's some of the germs lurking in bathrooms...

Gastrointestinal viruses that cause stomach ailments in humans. These include the norovirus, which you may have heard of in connection with cruise ship outbreaks. These viruses aren't just on cruise ships, they can be on your toilet seat as well. Gastrointestinal viruses "are easily transmitted and can remain on a solid surface for as much as a week," according to Philip Tierno, Jr., PhD, director of clinical microbiology and diagnostic immunology at Tisch Hospital, New York University Medical Center.

Enteric pathogens, which are organisms spread by contaminated foods and be carried in feces. These include things like E. coli, salmonella, shigella, and campylobacter. E. coli O157:H7 is particularly nasty, causing severe diarrhoea with bloody stools."

Skin and respiratory organisms, such as staphylococcus aureus (staph) bacteria, including the antibiotic resistant MRSA strain, and Group A Strep, known as the "flesh-eating" bacteria.

Dermatophitic fungi, like athlete's foot, transmitted by walking barefoot in the bathroom.

"Half of all bathroom taps have cold and flu viruses when someone has a cold or flu" according to Chuck Gerba, PhD, microbiology professor at the University of Arizona. The rhinoviruses that cause colds can survive up to three hours, so cleaning surfaces with disinfectant may help stop infections, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Other residual fungi like mould and mildew. "They [mould and mildew] don't cause infection, but they can exacerbate asthma and allergies" according to Tierno.

Scary stuff! Though there's no need to evacuate the bathroom. It simply means you need to clean! If you clean regularly there's little risk from the bathroom germs. "Only about 1%-2% of all germs are pathogenic, meaning they can make us sick," says Tierno. "There's a possibility you can catch something, but if you practice good personal, household, and food hygiene, you're at pretty low risk."

Make it a regular part of your routine to clean bathroom surfaces. Clean taps, cupboard handles, shower door handles, doorknobs and any other area that you touch with your hands.

Mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with 3 1/2 cups of water in a spray bottle.

To clean and sanitise bathroom surfaces, spray the bathroom basin and surfaces and wipe clean with a cloth or sponge.

Thieves Cleaner not only wipes through bathroom grime with ease, it smells great and doesn't contain any harmful chemicals, making the bathroom safe for you and your family.

Thieves Household Cleaner for Mould and Mildew

5. Mould and Mildew

Bathrooms are a breading ground for mould and mildew.

Mould isn't just unsightly, it's linked to a host of health problems. Allergic reactions are the most common health effects of mould. Mould allergy symptoms include wheezing, sneezing, respiratory problems, runny nose, itching eyes and coughing.

According to the CDC Center for Disease Control and Prevention "Excessive exposure to mould-contaminated materials can cause adverse health effects in susceptible persons regardless of the type of mould or the extent of contamination."[2]

In the past, most people have looked to use bleach to combat mould and mildew. Though you've just read about the health problems posed by bleach. Instead of using bleach, use the Thieves Household Cleaner to clean mould and mildew.

Use Thieves Household Cleaner undiluted on surfaces affected by mould and mildew. It's recommend to wear safety protection when dealing with mould to minimise your exposure to the mould spores. Use gloves and a respiratory mask.

When mould is cleaned, the mould spores are released into the air and can be breathed in. To help with combating the air-borne mould spores, diffuse the Thieves essential oil.
